Newbie setup problem

I just installed TFS Workgroup and am attempting to add a group of users to it (...and to Sharepoint...and Reporting services).

I began by following the "Walkthrough:Setting up groups and Permissions". I created a Windows group (but this group doesn't seem to appear under Local groups on my computer ?) called TFSDevelopers and that seemed to work. Next I wanted to add this group to the list of Sharepoint Administrators.(Following "How To: Set Administrator Permissions for Windows Sharepoint Services").

I made it the "Set Sharepoint Administration Group" webpage. For the Group account name I typed in the same name I created earlier when I was setting up groups and permissions .i.e. <server name>\TFSDevelopers. When I hit OK it errors out saying that "TFSDevelopers is not a valid account for Sharepoint Administration group."

Any ideas?

TIA,

The first topic, Walkthrough:Setting up groups and Permissions, is describing the process of creating a TFS group. This is not a Windows group, which is why you do not see TFSDevelopers in the local groups on your computer. A TFS group exists only within TFS and contains either domain or local users and groups. You create TFS groups to manage access to TFS-based resources.

The second topic, How to: Access Windows SharePoint Services Site Administration, is describing the process for configuring SharePoint administrator permissions. This topic describes one part of a larger administrative task which is to align administrator permissions for SharePoint, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and TFS. See the Team Foundation Server Administrator Permissions topic for context.

I read through the instructions and successfully created a TFSDevelopers group that had Admin permission in TFS, Sharepoint, and Reporting Services. Next I installed Team Explorer on a separate client box (Windows 2003 Server, removed Internet Explore Enhanced Security Configuration from that box). I tried to connect to the TFS server. In the "Add team Foundation Server" box I typed the name of the TFS server and used the default port. Pressing OK gave the error message:

"The request failed with HTTP status 403: TF53011: <my user name> is not a licensed user...."

I also found that I could not access Team Explorer directly on the TFS server itself using the same account (Same message as above). I also found that TFSSetup *could* access Team Explorer both locally and from the client box.

I think this is a permissions problem but the error message ------ not a licensed user. ------. throws me. I installed the MSDN TFS 1.0 Workgroup edition (ISO image) but I thought that supported 5 users.

Any ideas appreciated.

P.S. Since TFS, Sharepoint, and Reporting Services work together why doesn't MS build a new Management tool whereby TFS changes are propagated to the others? As it presently stands, I am trying to learn TFS and finding that a comfort zone with Sharepoint and Reporting services would be helpful. (Only problem, is that I planned to investigate those packages next , not at the same time as TFS. To much)

More info.

In Team Explorer (on the TFS box) I right-clicked the server name, selected "Team Foundation Server settings", then "Group membership". In the available Groups I selected "[SERVER]\Team Foundation Licensed users", "Properties". "Members" tab, and accepted the choise "Team Foundaiton Server group". The I pressed "Add" and selected "[SERVER]\TFSDevelopers" from the Add Group window. Selecting OK twice gave me this error message:

>>>

Team Foundaiton Error:

TF50637: Only Windows users can be added to the licnese group. Unable to add TFSDeveloeprs

>>>

If only ussrs can be added, what was the "Add Group" window all about?

** FLASH ** I added my domain user account to the list of Licensed users and now I can get in to TFS from the remote client. It looks like licensing is user based and totally independent of the TFS groups I created.

That's correct - the point of the Licensed Users group is to hold the Windows users (up to 5, of course) that will be allowed to access TFS. Since that group is the method of enforcing the user limit, it's very important that we only allow windows users (and not groups) into the Licensed Users group.

This doesn't preclude you from using other TFS groups (like TfsDevelopers in this case) for lots of other purposes, but with our Workgroup Edition, the Licensed Users group is the one group that has this particular behavior about its membership.

Glad to see you got it all figured out! :)
