Project Alert Administration

Does anyone know if there is a way to customize or create additional Project Alerts? I'm hoping the project alerts are like custom delivery channels in SQL Server Reporting Services where you can develop and install new ones. Our business has some special needs for Projects Alerts so this would be very helpful.
