I'm afraid that in v1 you really can't use an existing SharePoint installation to install TFS. We depend on certain items to be configured in a certain way. E.g., to support back-up, application pool access, configuration, etc. There is a whitepaper on MSDN which tells you how to configure TFS post install to point to another SharePoint server.

So, perhaps let TFS install configure SharePoint the way it wants to and then post install point it at your other system.

Is there a way to leave the current sharepoint on the server and then restore it? Does the TFS need a new install or can we just create another top level site?

If we dont care about it getting destroyed do we need to uninstall and then re-install or just let TFS re-configure the current install?
