AD and Team foundation server

Hi,

I've been haveing trouble installing VSTF server. Here's the error log,

TfsGSSInit - Team Foundation Server GSS Initialization Tool
(C) Copyright 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

TfsGSSInit - Irrecoverable error: TF50604: There was an error getting identity information from Active Directory.

09/12/06 13:48:22 DDSet_Status: Found the matching error code for return value '6130' and it is: '28002'
09/12/06 13:48:22 DDSet_Error: 6130
MSI (s) (94!58) [13:48:44:015]: Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server - ENU -- Error 28002.Error unknown.

09/12/06 13:48:44 DDSet_CARetVal: 28002
09/12/06 13:48:44 DDSet_Status: QuietExec returned 28002
09/12/06 13:48:44 DDSet_Exit: QuietExec ended

I read through the system requirements again and I still didn't see where it mentions you need AD to run VSTFS. However the error prevents you from fully installing the program.

Thanks for any help, - John

There is no need to have AD for installing TFS, can you provide more details about the environment you are trying to install?? is the machine a workgroup machine or is added to an AD? are you using in this last case an account which has access to AD for installing?? did you followed all the steps in installation guide??

We are running a non-AD NT domain. I'm attempting the single server install on a server that is a member of the domain. The box I'm using is new and loaded with Windows 2003 Server std R2. I've followed the install guide to the T, first creating domain accounts for Team Foundation services and SQL Server Reporting Services, making sure they can log on locally. I use our domain admin account to install the programs. The windows firewall is off. IIS was installed, then SQL Server 2005 with all the options and I chose most of the defaults, and followed the verification steps to make sure everything checked out ok, which they did. Sharepoint sp2 came with the OS I just installed the component, and verified that it worked, which again it did. I believe I downloaded the newest version of TFS and used that, since the demo disc we got is a version old. TFS health checks out ok except for warning me about windows firewall. From there the installation proceeds until the install bar hits 1/4th of the way through which gets me the 28002 error. I can click retry and it will go all the way to the end with the bar stopping short and hanging.

Here's a clip from the setup log, the msi log clip is still the same as above.

John:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but if you are going to use domain accounts to set up and operate TFS the domain structure must be native server 2000 or server 2003 with Active Directory. You can use local accounts to set up TFS in a non-AD domain, but each user of TFS must have a local account they use to log in to TFS.

The install guide mentions two options: one using Active Directory and one using local accounts.

Thanks Wendell,

Installing locally worked. For the user local accounts do you mean that each user of TFS will need a local account on the server that TFS is running on?

Thanks.

Great, glad your installtion succeeded.

TFS can not retreive credentials from a non-AD domain.

Yes, each user you want to uniquely identify in TFS will need to have a local account on the TFS server. If you have several people who will just need reader access, you could combine them on one account, but I am sure you will want to have developers, testers and admins individually identified. Please note that this is not in any way related to a licensing discussion.
