TFS RC on Domain Controller

We've just installed a brand new SBS server in our company to be the main server for MS Team Foundation System Server. What a surprise... the RC final version does not support to be installed on a domain controller and what more.. together with exchange...

Why? I just do not understand.. We need this TSF stuf (we used source safe but it was slow and not quiet secure) only for few employees (say 5 max) and just because of this we must have some special server? Oh my!

So.. is this some workaround? The question is: How to install TSF Server RC on a SBS 2003 premium server even if we plan to install also an exchange server?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards

Jan

PS: I found some threads here in forum where people were discussing about this issue. I understand that there could be some issues while installing on a DC. But this was yet a while ago. I hope there is a workaround here or maybe a new version of the TFS?

Running on a DC is unsupported because customers were reporting various issues to Microsoft. There is a published work-around (but this is unsupported).

If you want to give it a go then download the Beta Upgrade package from here:-

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=60341

And you will find the instructions inside. I tried it out and it seemed to work ok. However, I figured that Microsoft had made it unsupported for a reason so I ended up installing TFS on a dediated server which we now use.

Anyone planning a TFS installation now should factor in the cost of the server that it needs to run on (and the associated Windows 2003 Server standard edition license required). Because TFS uses Windows Sharepoint Services for the project portals I find it is easiest just to leave the server dedicated to being a TFS instance and not try to get too much else running on it.

Hi Martin,

We are a small development company that would like to have Exchanger Server running either within SBS or on Windows 2003 Server as well as TFS on the same server box.

Does that mean that we can get round the domain controller issue by installing Beta R3 and then using the update procedure you indicated in your message?

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Martin,

Please ignore last question as on actually reading (and taking in) the upgrade document, I can now see that Beta 3 has to be uninstalled, database upgraded and then RTM installed. Therefore, the domain controller installation failure will occur at RTM installation.

Thanks,

Adam

Cool - glad you figured it out, forum alerts have been broke for a while so I didn't see your question come in. For those new to this thread the upgrade docs give a workaround for installing the RTM version of TFS on a domain controller. However, it is unsupported. Those new to TFS should really look at installing TFS on a server of its own - I know that this makes it more expensive, but the initial outlay of a new server + OS will give you peace of mind that your configuration is supported and also mean that you have a tested upgrade path as future versions become available. There is definately no guarentee that future versions of TFS will be installable on a domain controller....

Cheers,

Martin.
