I originally had TFS Trial installed, and have since purchased the Team Suite MSDN that comes with TFS Workgroup Edition. How do I get the product key for the workgroup edition so I can update the trial license?

I have the same problem. Did you get an answer? Apparently the key is in the setup.sdb file on the installation media. I cannot find this file. We are wanting to migrate from the 180 day trial to the workgroup version, just until our full version arrives - about a week. Our 180 day trial has expired - no countdown!

Brian,
See the following post from Brian Harry:-
http://blogs.msdn.com/bharry/archive/2006/10/04/Last-word-on-TFS-Expirations-_2800_I-hope_2900_.aspx
The Version Detection Tool that he posts has a utility in it that will extend your TFS trial by 30 days - which I think you will find useful.
My understanding is that the workgroup editon has the product key installed as it it were a volume license. See http://blogs.msdn.com/robcaron/archive/2006/02/09/529033.aspx for instructions on finding this key. The Setup.spd file is in the atdt or at folders on your installation media.
Good luck - the extension tool seems like the more useful one for you.
Martin.

I updated the version from Trial to workgroup.. But now when I try to do anything, it is telling me I am not a licensed user. How do I fix this? I installed TFS using my account, I am the admin, but I cannot touch it. Please someone help me with this, it is critical.

I found the problem. I had to manually add the Team Foundation Licensed Users security group to the TFS server.

I spoke too soon, that wasn't the problem. Is there something I am missing here?

Dumb Question: Is your user in the TFS License Users Group?

There is no TFS License Users Group. However, I added one, but it still does not work. I added it as: Team Foundation Licensed Users

It should be a TFS Global Group called "Team Foundation Licensed Users" and your user should be a member. I've never tried moving from Trial to Workgroup myself so I could be leading you up a garden path.
If you are really stuck, then you could try uninstalling TFS and installing TFS Workgroup - but again I've never tried this myself.
Good luck,
M.

The group is a TFS Global Group. I would uninstall and reinstall Workgroup, but there are production projects inside of TFS Trial right now. Is there a way to revert back to the Trial until we purchase the full version of TFS?

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the help. I did manage to find the key and to complete the conversion from trial to workgroup. All is working fine, although the five users are a bit of a squeeze.
NOW I see from your post that that was possibly a mistake - the trial can be extended by another month!
Is it possible to still apply the extension to this workgroup edition, or can one convert back to expired trial and apply the extension then?
Many thanks
Bryan

Brian, your conversion went smoothly? When I went from Trial to Workgroup I lost all access to TFS. I had to connect using my TFSService account, and none of the Workgroup security groups were added to my TFS.

Hi Keith,
Yes indeed. The trick is to remeber to perform a repair once the upgrade process (having entered the key) has successfully completed. Simply go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, and this time perform a repair of the TFS. This action will create the necessary TEam Foundation Licensed Users group. Thereafter simply add domain accounts (max 5 of course) to this group and all is back to normal.
The article at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404852.aspx describes this process.

I tried that, but during the repair process I get this error:
Error 1309.Error reading from file: D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server\Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server - ENU\Program Files\TFS\Web Services\WorkItemTracking\bin\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Server.Dataaccesslayer.dll. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it
I checked and this directory does not even exist:
D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server\Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server - ENU\Program Files\
Any ideas?

Keith, unfortunately this is as far as my experience with this process goes!
We installed the workgroup edition from our MSDN disk: 3538
Looking at our TFS the file you mention is in: \Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server\Web Services\WorkItemTracking\bin
Hope this helps.

I also installed from the MSDN disk, but I do not have the \Program Files\ directory

Without having looked too deeply into this - the file in question is on the server and most probably was created at the time of the original trial version installation.
Perhaps you should log a call with MSDN support. |

Sadly, I don't think Workgroup -> Trial is a supported path. Workgroup to full is though so hopefully your key will arrive in a couple of days.
Maybe you can give Keith some pointers as to how you managed the Trial -> Workgroup migration?
