Hidden Fields

Can I add fields to a work item type, that are not displayed in the associated form?

In other words, I want to add hidden fields that have the "reportable" attribute - but these hidden fields are populated with a seperate application I would write.

Yes, you can add a field to workitemtype, but not to forms section. If it is not in forms section it won't be displayed to user. Pls make sure those fields are not involved in rules, otherwise if that field becomes invalid then user cannot fix it by fixing the field in UI.
