End user Tools for customising the Methology and Process Guide

Tools like witexport.exe and witimport.exe allow you to add new Work Items to an existing project, so permitting you to create new metrics as the project proceeds. However, at present these tools are part of the VSTS Extensibility Kit Beta 2. Are there plans to release them to everyone?

Similarly, will the MSF Build tool for changing Process Guidance be available to all?

What do you mean by everybody? The extensibility kit should be available externally. The MSF process compiler should be part of the Beta 3 extensibility toolkit. We have been working on improving the error messages in the compiler before releasing it.

I was envisaging a team deciding that some particular metric was important to them and so being able to add a new work item type to help them track it. This might happen in any team, so I was just wondering if these tools might eventually become part of the main product rather being hidden away in the extensibility toolkit. Is this the way MS see metric tracking being done?

The extensibility kit contains the documentation on how to customize the process and the work items. Since the work items are defined in xml and downloadable from VSTS, you can customize them without this documentation. Simpy, re-import the work items with the changes. The process compiler should be available in the extensibility kit soon.
