ie starts up but web test recorder is read only

when attemting to create a new web test, the IE browser starts up but the web test toolbar in the upper left pane is read only. A message states that the web test recorder must be launched from within Visual Studio. What gives?

It sounds like you're seeing a bug that is fixed in SP1 and an upcoming hotfix. The hotfix was supposed to be out a while ago, but everything that can go wrong has gone wrong getting it out the door. Your best bet would be to install the VS 2005 SP1 beta after registering for it here: http://connect.microsoft.com/visualstudio/
