Install Error - "Encountered a problem"

What is wrong with the Visual Basic Install? It does not even begin the installer. I get the message "Encountered a problem..", click "OK", and it is done. The message seems to come as the installer gathers files and performs system checks. I do have MS Office installed, and I am running XP pro SP2.

I am doing a manual installation from a CD. I tried to install Visual C just to see if there is something else I need to do prior to install. The installer runs with Visual C, Express Server and every other package. VB just does not want to go.

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Rudy.

I thank all of the folks who took the time to read my post. I still encounter the error message. To add more background info...

I already have Installer 3.1....

I already have .NET 2.0 installed with KB917283....

I strive to keep XP up to date with all patches...

I already said I have MS Office 2000pro with MS Access, but I did not say that I have CAD software which includes a version of Visual Basic 6. I need a stand-alone version.

I can think of no other potential conflicts.

Thanks again ahead of time.

Can you give some more info about the error? The exact message, any error number?

That is the problem. There isn't any error number. Just a small dialog box that says it encountered a problem, and a nice little box for you to click "OK".

I am trying to create a manual installation disk for VB. I can create them for some of the other Visual Studio packages, but not Visual Basic. With those others the installer displays an initial message about gathering files and so does VB. But VB never finishes the initialization process to begin the install. It simply "encounters a problem".

Thanks ahead of time to all for their efforts. I promise a months supply of Advil to Sherlock Holmes.

Do you have an option to expand the dialog to see more information? For me that has usually been a button in the error message dialog in the lower left corner.

Have you checked if there is any addition information in the event log?

That is it. I get a message box, not a dialog box. Yellow triangle with exclamation mark. Here is the exact context of the message.

"A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components. Canceling setup." There is a box to click "OK"

Does this pertain? The event viewer says, "The Windows Installer Service was successfully sent a start control." Two subsequent messages state the service enters a run state, then the service entered a stopped state. Nothing more than that.

The installer starts, seems to run startup and init routines, then quits. The other Visual Studio apps fly through this without a single blink. I'll be back on Monday.

You can check if there is any recent logfile in the %TEMP% folder. If you find one that seem to be created for the installation check if there is any more info in it that might reveal what goes wrong.

I have encountered the same error. The error message is exactly -
"A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components. Canceling setup"
The error message gives the standard "OK " button as the only option.
No error message number.
No event log errors relating to the install process.
Event log shows .NET started , run, paused, continue and stopped.
Environment is XP Pro SP2.
No previous installations of Visual Basic.
No previous installations of any Tech Preview, Beta, or CTP.
.NET framework version 2.0 w/ update KB917283 .
Please advise.
Thanks

I guess I am not the only one. I burned my install CD with IsoBuster, which seemed to work just perfect with the other VS Express Editions. It just won't fly with VB.

The message seems to be generated by Installer itself, not by the system. No errors or warnings are posted in the event viewer. Yes, I have turned on all of the logs.

To all interested parties, thanks for taking the time the think on this one.

I resolved the issue by burning different images with ISO-Buster. That program shows the image in more than one format. Only one format seemed to create a VB installation disk that actually worked. This was not the case with the other Express Editions. The Installer 3.1 would always initialize itself in the blink of an eye with the message that it was gathering information. I never got even that far.

I hope this helps the other person with a similar problem. Use the format with the green arrows icon ">>>".

Tried to post this as a "solution". I am sure others will run into this issue. Which image to burn? I burned the "Joliet" image...and it installed without a problem.
Rudedog2

What do you mean with joliet image? Is this a setting in the burning software? Did you download the iso or img file?

Please specify this and I will mark your reply as answer so others will know.

ISO-Buster is the program that I used. I downloaded both the "img" and the "iso" files and found them to be pretty much identical. ISO-Buster will present a tree on the left hand side of the screen that shows different icons corresponding to different formats.

Why it shows the file contents in more than one way is a topic for another post. The "manual installation" page of the Express Installs shows you screen shots of what this looks like. The instructions on that page do not tell you which view of the file to burn. I used the default view that came up and "encountered problems."

I had some time and CDs to burn. I burned all of the views from both files. One of them worked. That is the ">>>" arrows icon that the ISO-Buster help file identifes as "Joliet". It is a modification of the standard ISO-9660. It seems the program defaults to the "ISO" icon view. I had three different views when I opened the files.

I encountered the same problem, and it worked when used the files by extracting from the Joilet format tree node.

Is this confusing due to ISO-Buster or due to the procedure through which ISO image was created ?
